Faculty profile – (adequacy and competency of faculty):
The subject Assamese as a Major subject in degree level was introduced in the College curriculum in the year 1978. Right from the beginning the department introduced both Assamese General and Honours in the undergraduate level. The responsibility to head the department was taken up by Sri Kameshwar Das. After his superannuation this responsibility went to Sri Man Mohan Das .Sri Das retired in the year 1999. Since April 30, 1999, Dr. Santanamoyee Mazumdar is heading the department with success. The Assamese department started with three students in the Honours course in 1978. Out of them one student named Sri Lakhman Basumatary cleared Honours in 1981. The permanent affiliation in the Major course was granted from the session 1989-90, subject to concurrence by the state government and fulfillment of relevant clauses. The last 10 years saw a steady growth of the department in terms of students’ interest, extension of the number of students undergoing the undergraduate course in Assamese General and Major, not to mention the growing academic excellence the department aims at.

Admission policy.
The intake capacity of the department, particularly for Major (honours) students in degree programme is decided by the college administration. Thirty students can be enrolled in major classes as per the present admission policy of the College. The department enrols the candidates for such course on the basis of the academic weightage scored by the applicant on the basis of their aggregate marks, marks in Assamese at the intermediate level. The cut-off percentage of such weight is 40% for Assamese department.

Changes made in the courses or programmes during the past two years and the contribution of the faculty to those changes
Bongaigaon College is affiliated to Gauhati University. Hence it undertakes the courses designed by the University for Undergraduate Programmes of Arts and Commerce streams. However, the faculty members design their respective teaching plan and supply split-up syllabus to the students for entire session confirming to the departmental academic calendar. The University has changed the syllabi of Assamese for TDC classes in the year 2009.
