From the Desk of the Principal

Since its inception, Bongaigaon College has come a long way forward, completing an academic journey of fifty two years. Days of a sparse crowd of students, shanty-like classrooms and a handful of dedicated teachers will now be recalled as a mere memory. A memory by which some may read today’s version of the College. With a proliferation of students’ strength, teachers’ roles have swelled up, so has the infrastructure. Probably problems have doubled and the college has learnt to tide over these odds.

The triad of students, teachers and the society has more responsibility than ever before. The College would love to symbolize as an image of being more than a mere manufactory of degrees. Rather it would like to soldier on as an academic institution sharing positive values with the society and motivate learners to socio-cultural and intellectual activism. With everyone’s support Bongaigaon College can indeed realize its vision. The road is long. But it is committed to reaching its goal. Your unstinted support to our cause will only make the task easier.

Located at a distance of 200 kilometers to the west of the State's Capital, Bongaigaon town, over the years, has grown both industrially and educationally making it an important spot in Assam as well as in India. Situated on a sprawling sixty plus bighas of land (20.91 acres) in serene and rural surroundings, the College campus provides a perfect backdrop where learning is an enriching and enjoyable experience, and where apart from giving basic thrust on learning, emphasis is also given on personality development, sports, extra curricular, co-curricular, cultural activities and career development of the students.

The College had a humble beginning with the opening of Pre-university (Arts) classes under Gauhati University in the year 1964 with 150 students and eight teachers. At a later period, two Commerce subjects were introduced in the pre-university course. A little later the full-fledged Pre-university Commerce course started in 1984.

Degree Arts classes started in 1966-67 session and subsequently got affiliated by Gauhati University in 1971. Then realizing the absence of any institution for commerce education in undivided Goalpara District and also realizing the increasing commercial importance of the place, Degree Commerce classes were started in the year 1978. At present the College offers General and Major Courses in both streams of Arts & Commerce. Considering the growing demand for professional course in the locality, the College introduced Bachelor course in Business Administration (BBA) and Bachelor of Mass Communication & Journalism (BMC) with prior permission from Gauhati University since the session 2008-09 and 2009-10 respectively. Bowing to the public demand for post-graduate Master’s programme in English, the College authority took steps to begin the two-year PG Master’s course in English in the year 1991. Immediately afterwards, the post-graduate department in English of the College was accorded affiliation by the university. Since 2002 PG Master’s course in English has been running on Semester system. The academic journey of the college took a further step by introducing Sociology as a General subject in Higher Secondary and TDC levels since 2016. Gauhati University has also accorded its permission to introduce M.A Programme in Hindi from the current session, i.e., from 2017.

We have, at present, four programmes at UG level, i.e., BA, B.Com, BBA (Three years degree course) and BMC (UGC sponsored Bachelor course in Mass Communication & Journalism) and one programme at PG level, i.e., MA in English, with a provision of introducing MA in Hindi from the next session. Apart from these, we introduced from the 2003-04 session some short-term professional courses like Certificate, Advanced Certificate and Diploma courses in computer application, Taxation Practice & Procedure and TALLY based Financial Accounting under UGC sponsored scheme of Equal Opportunity Centre in the College for career orientation of the students.
Bongaigaon College has been affiliated to Gauhati University, Guwahati. It conducts all its academic activities as per GU norms. The purpose of this College is basically to teach and encourage research in specified subjects leading to award of degrees to the students of the College by Gauhati University.

Bongaigaon College was accorded B+ grade (Scoring 78% marks) by the National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC) of UGC on 3rd May 2004. The second cycle of accreditation placed the college with B grade, having 2.71 grade point in March 2012.

The college has been preparing for its third cycle of accreditation by regularly and timely submission of Annual Quality Assurance Report (AQAR). It is hoped that NAAC accreditation will galvanize its teachers and students into a greater determination to upgrade the status of the College in future.

Offering major courses in as many as 12 subjects in the undergraduate level, a master’s programme in English, vocational courses in BBA and BMC, four short term courses, Bongaigaon College is now recognizably a large institution of higher learning. The College values the Platonic idea of abstract knowledge as much as the professionalism of education. It has a mission to promote short term professional courses which students may undertake while pursuing their normal academic programme, with a view to extending institutional support to students in honing their skills leading to various professions. The College is set to expand outreach activities among people of the locality to help them imbibe awareness of exigent ideas for a healthy, thinking living.

Bongaigaon College has just about undertaken a long term Comprehensive Capacity Building Programme whose substantive focus will be on value based or need based education, quality enhancement in educational process, innovative teaching methodology and developing organizational strategy.

Long live Bongaigaon College.

Yours faithfully
Dr. H. C. Das
